I don’t trust the GOP.

I have a hard time believing that high-ranking members of the Republican party are converting in droves because they’ve suddenly had a change of heart.

I hear them saying that Palin is the catalyst. And I don’t doubt for a second that she does (and should) scare the hell out of a lot of smart people, even those on the Right. Smart people can’t make currying the favor of fools their policy for long. And since McCain’s been doing his best elderly-hotheaded-petty-churlish-crazypants impression lately, I can understand how even diehard conservatives would want to distance themselves from his camp.

Unfortunately, I feel as though the GOP has made calling black white and scoffing at common sense an official policy for at least the last 15-20 years, so I just don’t buy that they are all changing sides because it makes sense.

The cynic in me says they all recognize the shitstorm brewing (economic crisis, MidEast pullout, cultural clusterfuck) and want to put as much distance as possible between themselves and the hard times to come. Because none of that will be sorted in the next four years, but history predicts the public has a short memory, and will remember the party in office when the storm touched down as the villains.

So I’ll take your vote, Mr. and Mrs. GOP. Just don’t expect me turn my back in your presence.

I don’t trust them either, but there’s a guy at my job who falls into this category and he seems quite sincere. He thinks the GOP is putting winning the election over the presidency.

But I agree totally, I’m willing to bet you that there are high ranking GOP officials ready to swallow this potential loss because in 4 years they can plan to come back as the “savior” party.

I can be pretty cynical though.

I don’t call it cynical….I call it realistic because history has shown us that’s what tend to happen (or at least efforts itself in that manner).

For the record, I don’t even want to turn my back when they’re not around…they’re that scary to me.
